Greetings To All Old Lasallians 1959 to 2008 From Brother Felix Donohue
La Salle School Petaling Jaya celebrates 50 years of service to the cause of education this year. Originally there was a single-storey, six classroom block but as the school developed many other buildings were added resulting in the present day complex of buildings. A number of these buildings date back to the 1960's and early 1970's. This means they have been in service for 40-50 years and are now showing signs of wear and tear giving parts of the building an appearance of decay and neglect.
The headmistress and staff are concerned about this and have gone to the trouble of preparing a power point presentation for the OLA website which will provide you with a graphic depiction of areas of the school in urgent need of repairs and replacement. You will see potholes in the driveways, chipped cement floors and staircases, leaking roofs and ceilings, disintegrating wooden sun screens, loose and exposed electrical wiring, a badly damaged (vandalised) chain link fence and a lecture hall in need of refurbishment.
As a former student of La Salle I am sure you will see this as a situation calling for action and so I am appealing to all former students to come forward and respond to this situation by helping through donations in cash or in kind. I believe the school will break down the work into parcels and provide a quotation for each. This will enable individual students or small groups from various year groups to sponsor specific jobs which should not be too costly. All cash donations go to the Board of Governor's account and the Board together with the school and the PIBG will be responsible for the work carried out.
I would like to finish with an anecdote. A former student of mine in a different school to La Salle was a diehard supporter of his old school. After graduation he settled in Singapore and raised a family there and never missed an opportunity to laud his old school as the best of all. Years later on a visit to his home town he brought his children, now students in Singapore schools, to see his old school. On reaching there he raised his arms and declared loudly, "The best school in the world". There was silence and then his eldest son somewhat startled said," Dad surely you didn't attend a dump like this!!!!!" Ouch!! Dad was totally deflated and had to admit his son had a point. He later recovered and got working with his colleagues and soon the old school was glistening in a new coat of paint and considerable repair and renovation works greatly enhanced its appearance. I am sure you would want to avoid a similar experience.
